WHIRRR

Since I am obviously the worst blogger in the history of the known universe – this post is cobbled together out of memories and evidence of existence.

A very important thing happened – I put on an event at a local art gallery.

I did everything as ALAN, for ALAN.

The plan was to create a special night where ALAN could be free to be who ALAN is – that is – I think – to do things Leonie wouldn’t do – in terms of performing, organising, creating.

I came up with an idea to ‘invent’ a community group based on the intrinsic link between art and music.  This group would then form the basis of the target audience/particiapants for an event that I only knew i wanted to put on in a venue that was not a common / usual venue.  Just for aesthetics and vibe.

It is quite difficult, it seems, to find a venue where I am from – when you have no money and you want to do what you want to do.  I searched every day – for about month – for the right place.

In a round-about series events – this search led to me renting my very first artists studio (or rather a table and wall in a 6×4 space) in an artist run gallery / studios 30 minutes from my house.  I had never set foot in the studios before – put off by the fancy name and the very fact that ‘artists’ went there (eugh).

Note 1 : A rough plan

WHIRRR.001 – AUDIO VISUAL EXHIBITION

Objectives

To learn how to curate artists/musicians

To build awareness of the collective

To experiment with my own personal work in a live environment

Format and content

Intimate, almost niche? but also public!

With hopes the audience will be there as they are interested in supporting musicians and artists in their community.

Event plan

There is no budget.  SO everything will need to be begged stolen / borrowed.

Borrow PA

borrow MOST of the set

will have to buy projectors – but they are investment and can be used in the future.

artists will bring most of their own equipment.

list of stuff to bring

Really, the whole point of putting myself through the rigmarole of putting on an event from scratch was that I knew I wanted to do some kind of performance for the final/summer show.  I had to put some ideas into practice to see if if it was actually doable / within my skill remit.

I am not an organised person.  I am not au fait with putting myself ‘out there’.  I am scared of most human interaction.  If this was to work at all it would have to be purely by ALAN’s merit.

ALAN at this point kind of became a real driving point – more than ever before.  This exercise pushed me to a place I had never been before.  ALAN pushed me.  It was almost a supernatural force – I had to let go of all inhibitions and fear.  I had to believe that my dreams would be achieved by putting my faith in something I could not yet explain, that I didn’t fully understand.

The last time I put on a gig I was 17 and no one 5 people came.  Failure was not an option this time round.  I did question myself – what would be a measure of success?  Would it be that enough people came to the event and paid to get in so that I would break even?  Would it be that if only a handful of people came as long as ALAN had a positive effect on them that was enough?  I guess success has so many variables.

To cut a long story (3 months of preparation) short,  the event came true – ALAN had a platform to curate, perform and share.  The night was a success, people came, people played, people contributed, art was made.  And I just about broke even.

After the event the group that I invented for it grew.  You can see it in real life here.
